As a kid I remember watching the classic western called “True Grit”, starring one of the grittiest dudes of that era – John Wayne. In his role as Rooster Cogburn, he was a no-nonsense, don’t-mess-with-me, “get-er-dun” sort of guy. It didn’t really matter how big the challenge or how often he got knocked down. I am not endorsing all that John Wayne stood for, however, his attitude was one of getting back up and taking the challenge head-on. He had grit!
Here are a couple of researchers who have been tackling this concept of mindset and grit. They provide helpful insight into some essentials for us as Mavericks. What is more than interesting for me is the profound, and not surprisingly serious, parallel to the Word. God has already designed you to operate with “grit”. He has supplied all that you need to operate with a mindset that provides the foundation to lead yourself and those in your home, business, church and community well.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to sink into the “attitude” blog from last week, I would encourage you to do so. Those scriptures will help you understand more of what is meant by attitude, grit, mindset etc.
Here are 2 suggestions to help maximize your value for time invested.
- Set aside 30 minutes to watch the videos and reflect on the learning.
- Take notes on learning that strikes a cord for you.
Researcher #1: Stanford psychology researcher, Carol Dweck.
She is recognized as a prominent mindset researcher. Click on the image link below to watch the video. It is well worth your 10 minutes – 22 seconds.
If you would like some more helpful reading regarding growth vs. fixed mindset here is a link to a Harvard Business Review article. It is a more than helpful read.
Researcher #2: Angela Duckworth, psychologist, University of Pennsylvania.
She left a “high flying” consulting job to teach 7th graders. In that process, she discovered that IQ was not the determining factor for the students’ success. This short, 6:20 video will give you a lens into what she discovered. Click on the image link below to watch the video.
If you are really keen then you can download a “Grit Test” and discover your own grit!
“The Grit Test – Angela Duckworth”
Over the next few weeks we will be exploring the principles and practices of what it means to be a Maverick small business leader. Out of the gate it begins with…
Growth Mindset & Grit!
You will not be all that God would have for you if you do not bring a kingdom mindset to bear; a mindset that has “grit”. Romans 8:5-6 reveals the only option if we claim to follow Him. He has invited you to lead with a “mindset” on what He desires for you, your business, your home, your church and more.
What’s your mindset? Do you have grit?
A Maverick Application:
- What is God teaching you about you and your mindset?
- Is your mindset fixed or growth?
- What are the implications – good or not so good?
- Did you take the “grit test”? If so, how “gritty” are you?
- Where are you sensing God asking you to grow and develop in your mindset?
