Sudden tragedy….so fast. Last night, standing by the bedside of a young man, with my hand on his head, praying. Praying for God’s healing mercy and grace on this young man, now hovering between life and death.
His family was coming and going. Reeling with this brutal and unwelcomed circumstance, clinging to any semblance of hope – hope for any thread of news that would remove this pain and restore their son – their brother.
Around me the trauma team, with focused attention, was attending to him and others in the area. A tangle of instruments beeping, lights flashing, cables, wires and more all spoke loudly about the brevity of life.
So sudden….so fast! I prayed.
As business leaders we can get so easily caught up in the demanding pace we have chosen. We can feel victim to the seemingly never ending and insurmountable pile of “to-do’s”. And yet, in one nanosecond, all can be brought into clear and stark focus. In one moment, all that we were feeling to be incessantly pressing and demanding is no longer in the forefront.
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 22:36-40 as to what is most important in life. I believe it to be true. I saw it – again – as I stood bedside with a young man and his family, clinging to life, hoping for more.
Let’s not wait until we are forced to have our attitudes and actions realigned with what’s most important, with the One who made us.
Here are 3 questions for us to ponder in the here and now.
- Is your sense of abiding, remaining, dwelling with the One who made you growing? John 15:1-17
- Are you living well in community with those that God has around you? John 13:34-35
- Are you growing well in your capacity to love yourself the way your Father in heaven loves you? Psalm 139
Let’s not wait until we are forced to engage with God and with one another. Let’s not wait until life’s circumstances dictate the needed conversations. Let’s be men and women who, steeped in the love that Christ has for us, step out with Kingdom courage to do what is needed in the moment.
Life can change so suddenly….so fast! Let’s love boldly. Let’s live like we are actually “born again”, full of grace and truth!
A Maverick Application:
- What are your reflections on the above 3 questions?
- What may God be asking of you?
- Are you willing to obey? Why or why not?
- Who can you share this with?
