Just a bunch of ordinary leaders. That’s what we are. Nothing more and nothing less.” These leaders meet weekly as part of our “Maverick Master’s Mind” Business Leaders Group.
We were reminded of a couple of things that are crucial for us as we consider growing in the leadership of 3 key areas…
- Self: learning, growing and becoming the man / woman God has designed you to be at work, home and community.
- The business God has entrusted to us: creating a great place to work, such that the gospel of Jesus and His kingdom is advanced in and through the business.
- Making disciples: learning to engage people right were they are at; helping them become the very best version of themselves.
These 3 are non-negotiable, in my opinion, if Jesus is who He says He is to you.
If these 3 “Non-negotiables” are real, how do you and I step into them? How can you even contemplate growing in these areas when you are already feeling…
- No time.
- Pressed to the max.
- Relational work unfinished.
- Embarrassed by history.
- Unqualified.
- Uneducated.
- …..?
I believe that listening to these temptations has crippled so many leaders from stepping out and engaging in what God would have for them at work and at home. Maybe you too?
One of the seductions of our day (and maybe over time) is the feeling that one needs more formal education, more qualifications in terms of religious training, before we can engage in leading well as Jesus would have us lead.
With respect, allow me to “poke a few holes” in that thinking.
In Acts 4:1 -13 we are provided with an incredible view of what’s possible by a couple of very ordinary guys. These men experienced God doing some very incredible things.
Take a moment to read these verses and then reflect on verse 13.
Here are 4 questions that can promote steady learning and growing in how God can work through us to advance His purposes in the lives of those around us.
- Are people “amazed” by the reality of Christ in you and through you? Matt 5:13-16 MSG
- Are you growing in boldness and courage, not because of your skill, but because of the reality of God “within you”? Joshua 1:9 NLT
- Are you enjoying being an “ordinary” leader, one “with no special training”, knowing that you are personally engaged with an extraordinary God? Acts 4:13 NLT
- When people engage with you, do they see you as a leader “who has been with Jesus”? 1 Peter 3:15 NLT
God advances His purposes and His capacity to invite people into His way of life and living through very ordinary men and women like you and me. We are called as leaders to have our lives steeped in Christ.
Is yours?
A Deliberate Application:
- Read Acts 4:1-13.
- What are you sensing God ask of you?
- What will you do in response?
- Who will you share this with?
