In an article in the January 23, 2018 Globe and Mail, Rowan O’Grady President of Hays Canada provides some very sobering statistics that have him ringing the alarm bells on behalf of business owners and leaders.

Take a look at these comments from the article…

  • Canada’s jobless rate is hitting a 40 year low.
  • More than half of the business leaders have seen business activity increase in the last year. Almost ¾ are expecting the same in 2018.
  • Employers are ready to capitalize on the market opportunity and yet have not given thought to where the talent will come from to support the growth.
  • In 2014, 78% of employees were prepared to leave their current jobs if presented with the “right offer”. Today, that number sits at 89%.
  • Many employers are looking to “throw money” at the recruitment challenge. At some level they are unaware that wage is only about 40% of the consideration for the ideal team member.
  • Awesome team members need to see a clear career path, along with benefits and a meaningful company culture.

The reality of the market place for the small business owner is, at one level, filled with opportunity and also rife with challenge regarding the need to attract and keep great people.

For the Christ-following employer, this presents challenge for sure. At the same, it also presents a wonderful opportunity to lead into the creation of a kingdom- focused culture.

Here are 5 steps you can take to help lead into the reality of a really tight labour market.

  • Lead yourself well.  Grow and mature in Christ; becoming more and more the Godly leader you were designed to be. Philippians 2:12 NLT
  • God is clear in His instruction to not lead yourself and others with fear. He is with you – trust Him. Isaiah 41:10 NIV
  • Be clear on what is most important for you and your team – your culture. If you, as the employer, are not clear on what matters most… others will define it for you. Ephesians 5:15-17
  • Expect the process to be difficult, choose resilience because of the call of God on you and your business. Take heart in the midst of the challenge. John 16:33 NLT
  • Build a proactive strategy and plan to “Always Be Recruiting” ABR! Just like sales and marketing… recruiting is never done. Turn the proverbial tap off and, at some point, the flow of leads will dry up.
