Is Your Head In The Team Engagement “Sand”?

3 questions to help attract & retain great people

One of the most difficult tasks for a leader and business owner is to “own” the team culture within their business. In fact, as it is for many, you may not be wanting to face this!  For some of you this task may be daunting and you find it easier to just dig your head in the sand.  You know there’s a better way, but yet you often feel stuck.  Unintentionally you then subscribe to the proverbial, “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.”

As the point leader in your business it is your job to own and build a healthy, flourishing business culture. As Christ-followers we can have the courage to lead a team culture that is built on faith, hope and love… where the everyday practice of leading “full of grace and truth” are alive and flourishing.  We love because He first loved us.  Ephesians 3 NIV reminds us:

"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power . . . to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

Rooted in love, tapped into His power you and I can be all that that we’re designed to be!  Yes, you can lead a positive culture of team engagement!  Watch an example of this in action.  We are not suggesting you need to live out your faith in an identical way as the leaders at Correct Craft.   At the same time, there is much healthy learning to consider:

So, do you truly know the real story of your team’s culture & engagement”?

  • How many are fully “all in”?
  • How many are “putting in time”?
  • How many are actively making things difficult for your team and/or disengaged? 

Does this truly matter? Look at just a few of the stats from Gallup’s 2017 Report on the state of the workplace & employee engagement

  1. Only 33% of employees are engaged.
  2. 51% are disengaged.
  3. 16% are actively disengaged.

This would be like trying to row a boat of 12 people with 4 actively rowing, 6 watching the scenery and 2 rowing backwards. No wonder most business owners and leaders are worn out!

Three helpful questions for you & your business:

  1. Do you know the engagement levels for your team? You cannot serve your team well as their leader if you do not know where their engagement levels are. Mark 10:45 NLT
  2. Are you modeling a leadership life with Christ at the center? Gal 1:10 NLT
  3. Are you willing to do the leadership work that courageously builds a kingdom values based culture? Romans 12:1-2 MSG

Deliberate Application:

  1. Reflect and pray on the 3 questions and verses above.
  2. What adjustments are you sensing God asking of you as you consider the leadership and engagement of your team?
  3. Who will you share this with?

ACTION:   Imagine what’s possible… and pray that God would help you model and lead a team culture that is aligned with Christ and His kingdom.
