Recruiting: a privilege or burden?

5 Reasons to always be recruiting

I smiled as sat with this business owner.  A religious person for his whole life, he shared his story of coming to life in Christ over the last three years. His eyes filled with tears more than once - overwhelmed with God’s grace and goodness in his life. He shared story after story of seeing God use him, his family and his business to bless “harassed and helpless” people in his circle of influence. This leader is engaged!

Over the last few weeks I have invited you to “Always Be Recruiting”.  There are clearly obvious, pragmatic and legitimate reasons to be recruiting: growing talent, succession and more. And while these reasons are real, I invite you to consider another frame to be always recruiting:  your privilege and responsibility.

One of the fundamental reasons of recruiting people to join your team is the privilege representing God’s kingdom to people who are far from Him.

As Christ-following business owners we have a special right and role as group of people upon whom God is asking to be His representatives out there in the market place.

5 reasons for you to lead recruiting as a special privilege:

  • Love: John 13:34-35 NLT is clear. People around you will know that you are a disciple of Jesus because of the love you have for them and for others.
  • Ambassador: You are an ambassador of Christ. As you lead, recruit, manage, and maybe fire, you are called to be an ambassador of Christ. 2 Cor 5:18-21 NLT
  • Image of God: How do you see people? How do you see yourself? Genesis 1:27 NLT is clear about the person you are recruiting. They are made in the image of the One you claim as God.
  • Serve: How do you see your team? Are they there to serve you or are you there to serve them? Mark 10:45 NLT is clear. He came to serve not be served. Who will be served as you recruit?
  • Make Disciples: No business owner and leader is exempt from the call of the Great Commission Matthew 28:18-20 NLT. As a Christ following leader you have the privilege of helping people in your employ experience what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

What are your reasons for recruiting?

A Deliberate Application:

  • Reflect on your reasons for recruiting.  How do the above verses inform your thinking?
  • What adjustments in your attitude and actions are you sensing God ask of your recruiting?
