This weekend is our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. Leading up to this, I have been reflecting upon how frequently the crucible of business presents us with significant opportunities to cultivate an attitude of gratitude in all circumstances – yes…all circumstances.
It’s relatively easy to be grateful while experiencing God’s blessings. It’s another thing to do so when under significant pressure.
What does gratitude look like when?:
- A key team member suddenly gives notice when you are already short staffed
- A major client pulls their account when your cash flow is already tight
- A supplier fails to deliver as promised…creating havoc for your team and customers
The apostle Paul’s challenging words in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLT remind us that we are to choose gratitude in all circumstances, even in those real life situations listed above.
In each of the above situations I had the privilege of witnessing each business owner choose an attitude of gratitude in the midst of confusing and frustrating circumstances.
Here are 5 significant reasons for God’s call to cultivate gratitude in the midst of difficult circumstances. Godly gratitude reminds you that:
- God is in control of all things; you are not. He will strengthen and help you. Isaiah 41:10 NIV
- God is an ever-present help in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1 NIV
- God will guard your heart and mind in Christ as you work through a tough situation. Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
- You have an opportunity to improve and grow when circumstances are difficult. We are to be grateful for pressure. James 1:2-4 NIV
- You are blessed when you are at the “end of your rope”. There is more room for God in your life and your business. Matthew 5:3 MSG
There is something very beautiful in the offering of humble gratitude regardless of circumstance.
In Matthew 5:13 – 16 MSG Jesus issues a bold charge to His followers. He is clear why we are here…to be salt…to be light!
Gratitude is one of the defining attitudes of Christ-following business owners and leaders. It is one of the ways we are to “bring out the God-flavors of this earth”.
How is your “attitude of gratitude”? What would your team say? Do you know?
A Deliberate Application:
- Reflect on 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
- What are you sensing God asking of you as you consider His call to cultivate gratitude in all things?
- What challenges you as you consider the implications?
- Who will you share this with?
