I recently enjoyed an evening with a business leader friend. He was wrestling with some not-so-small questions:
- “I feel like He (meaning God) is talking to me. Why is He talking to me?”
- “Why can’t I just focus on being a good person, a good leader?”
- “Why do I feel so uncomfortable each time we discuss spiritual things?”
As I pondered his reflections, I recognized a common question all must face…”Who is this Jesus, what does He want from me and why do I need Him?”
For many, life has “beat them up”. It has not turned out as planned. For some, this dilemma is a product of their own poor choices. Others were subjected to the poor, possibly destructive choices of people around them...significant disappointment, grief, pain, heartache…maybe even despair!!
I am profoundly impacted by the reality of God; the creator of the universe entering my world and your world. Paul, in Romans 8:3 MSG says it this way...
Have you recently stopped and intently allowed this sober, yet filled-with-hope, reality sink in…that of Christ entering the disordered mess of your life?
As business owners and leaders we are far too often caught up in making things happen; taking charge so that we can achieve goals, hit targets, accomplish what needs to be done. These are all good and necessary as we look to operate sustainable businesses. However, it’s a very real seduction; one that lures most of us into a space of self-sufficiency. God help us – God help me!
It doesn’t matter how accomplished we are, how motivated, how focused, how disciplined. None of these things can save us when it comes to the “disordered mess” of our souls. As hard as we may try, we cannot rescue ourselves from the struggling mess of our own individual human condition.
I need to be rescued. You needed to be rescued!!
John 1:14 MSG is a wonderful reminder of the Rescuer moving into my world, your world.
I am so very grateful for the Christmas season, reminding me of my need for rescue, reminding me that Jesus has moved into my soul and my “neighborhood”.
How about you?
A Deliberate Application:
Christmas (Christ-mass) reminds us that Jesus has “moved into the neighborhood”. Here are 5 “Christ-mass” questions to reflect on as a business owner and leader:
- Are you experiencing the sobering wonder of Jesus rescuing you today?
- Has Jesus “moved into the neighborhood” of your life, your home, your work, and your community. What’s He doing in your neighborhood? Where are you seeing Him at work? Do you see Him at work?
- What areas of your “disordered life” may be clouding your ability to “see” and experience the Rescuer at work in your “neighborhood”. Make those areas right with Him and with others.
- Choose to enjoy Him being your Rescuer!
- Who will you share this with?
