Ugh! Here I am again. Very frustrated!  Reflecting on the volume of challenges in so many areas of life. My mindset is off!  I am not seeing clearly. My mindset is off course.  I need to take a good look in the mirror – again! Sound familiar?

Paul, in Romans 7, highlights this mindset challenge we have as we look to lead ourselves and others well.

“But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.”
Romans 7:17-20 MSG

Here are 10 “Stinkin thinkin” mindsets you’ve likely entertained. Which ones have you battled with lately?

  1. It’s impossible to find good people.
  2. Even if I did find good people I won’t be able to keep them.
  3. No one understands the pressure I am under.
  4. There’s no one I can talk to regarding the realities of being a Christian and a small business owner.
  5. Millennials are not committed.
  6. Millennials are entitled.
  7. I’m trapped – there is no way out of the grind of business ownership.
  8. Profit is a necessary evil of business. At least I can give some away and feel better about myself.
  9. I hate sales!
  10. People only work for me to get a paycheck.

There are elements of truth in each of the 10 Stinkin’ Thinkin’ mindsets.  While the challenge may be quite real, the question for you is this…is what you are thinking and feeling true? Are all millennials uncommitted and entitled? Is it true that it is impossible to find and keep good people?

The answer is a resounding “No”!!!

“The number one challenge and issue for you as a small business leader is your mindset!”

Although you may be feeling the weight and implication of what is pressing you, the art of leading oneself well under pressure requires a deliberate choice to choose a Godly mindset.

Time to reaffirm that we do not have what it takes in our own strength and wisdom. To operate with a Godly mindset is to, once again, declare clearly that the answer is found in Jesus Christ. This is the mindset that brings life and peace. Romans 8:5-6 NIV

The apostle Paul reminds us of this in Romans 7:24-25 MSG.
