Here is the 1st of 3 solutions that, all things being equal, will pave the way for far more ease and much less wear and tear.

Time to be the CEO!! Yes, I know what you are thinking. Of course you are the Chief Executive Officer for your business. However, that is not what I am talking about. Time to be the Chief Engagement Officer!!

What do I mean by Chief Engagement Officer?

Jesus offers us significant clarity as we wrestle with the idea of being the Chief Engagement Officer of the business entrusted to us. Matthew 22:34-40

Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?’ Jesus replied,‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Now that you are hearing the first in a series of solutions, you may be wondering how it all fits together. Join us at our Lunch & Learn in Burlington where we will dive deeper and continue this discussion.

Here is what being the Chief Engagement Officer of your business DOES NOT mean:

  1. It does not mean that your focus is about being nice. Check out these past blog posts (Jesus was not a "nice" man, Another "nice" trap) if you need to be convinced.
  2. It does not mean that you are not allowed to ensure healthy profit. Profit is beautiful. No profit, no business – period!
  3. It does not mean that you can’t fire poor performers (done well and done right) as needed.

From Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus offers us 3 realities of what being the Chief Engagement Officer DOES mean for us as business owners and leaders.

As a Christ-following small business owner, you are called to:

  1. Love God fully and intentionally with every part of who and whose you are.
  2. Love the people touched by your business. Note: Love being defined as “I choose to extend myself for another’s highest good”
  3. Love yourself in clear and focused alignment with how God sees and loves me.

As you grow in your capacity to live out these 3 realities, you will be equipped to be the CEO of your business – The Chief Engagement Officer. You will be able to more fully create:

  1. A flourishing workplace that allows for the God design in each team member to be expressed more and more over time.
  2. A client / supplier experience that causes people to be curious and ask for the “reasons for your hope” 1 Peter 3:15 NIV.
  3. A business of excellence in which healthy, thoughtful profit can be realized year over year. There is a “kingdom excellence” in how business processes work together to add value and deliver on the promises made. Colossians 3:23 NLT.

If you are looking to lead a small business that consistently is able to find and keep great people, it will start with you. It starts with you being the CEO!
