Here’s your bonus solution.

“Can’t find them…can’t keep them.”

“There’s no loyalty in the workplace anymore.”

“I’ve given up trying to find a warm body…I’ll settle for a cold one.”

Just a few quotes…frustrations from discussions I had with small business owners last week at our Lunch & Learn – “Finding & Keeping Great People". This is their experience – their reality. Is it yours?

There is another reality, another way of thinking, another way to experience the privilege of employing and engaging millennials.

Here are 7 Millennial “shift-your-thinking” realities for the Christ-following small business leader:

  1. You are called to love – to extend yourself for the highest good of another. Jesus challenged the religious leaders into a different way of thinking – the way of love. As you think about millennials and the potential to engage and employee them – do you “love” them? Matthew 22:34-40 NLT
  2. You are called to “disciple”, to help people engage in the beauty and way of God’s kingdom. Are you clear on your role as a disciple-making small business leader? Matthew 28:18-20 MSG

  1. Do Millennials change jobs more frequently? Pew Research suggests otherwise. Their data show that millennials are NO MORE likely to change jobs than the Gen – X’er.
  2. In their 2018 Millennial Survey Deloitte found that Millennials and Gen Z:
    1. Are challenged to trust the motives of business leaders who may claim all things good about culture and people, yet operate on a different set of priorities.
    2. Are more loyal when there is diversity, inclusion and flexibility…in addition to the attraction of good pay and positive culture.
    3. Are feeling unprepared for Industry 4.0. They are looking for companies that are developing their teams to succeed in this new reality.
  3. Millennials and Gen Z are no different than we are. They are people looking for leaders that take personal interest in them. Mark 10:45 NIV. Would your team agree that you take personal interest in them?
  4. The basic design of people, made in God’s image Genesis 1:27 NLT, is to grow and to flourish. John 15:1-17 NIV Millennials and Gen Z are designed to grow and learn. Are you creating space for your team’s growth?
  5. By 2020 Millennials will be 35% of the workforce; Gen Z will be 24%. By 2025 the numbers will be a total of 75%. The numbers don't lie. Are you prepared to lead the next generation well?

The shift of the Millennial in the workplace has happened. Whether you like it or not, at one level, is immaterial. The question is this… "Have you made the shift?"
